MINSK -- A jailed freelance journalist who has worked for RFE/RL’s Belarus Service, is facing unspecified criminal charges, his relatives told RFE/RL on December 23.
elarus's Interior Ministry has added RFE/RL's Belarus Service, known locally as Radio Svaboda, to its registry of extremist organizations, in a continued clampdown on independent media and civil society sparked by an eruption of protests against authoritarian ruler Alyaksandr Lukashenka's claim he won a presidential election last year that the opposition says was rigged.
Radio Svaboda freelancer Andrei Kuznechyk was to be released from a temporary detention center on December 15. His second 10-day arrest ended that day.
Ksenia Martul, a lecturer at the journalism department of the Belarusian State University, was detained during classes on December 14.
The EBU calls for all journalists imprisoned in Belarus to be released and for journalists to be able to do their job safely and without threat or hindrance.
On Human Rights Day, December 10, 2021, the Seimas of Lithuania hosted the Lithuanian-Belarusian forum “Human Rights and Journalism” attended by representatives of the Belarusian Association of Journalists and international human rights organizations. The forum participants discussed the human rights situation in Belarus, ways to influence the situation and provide assistance to the media community.
The Belarusian portal Ezhednevnik (ej.by) is blocked. Its editor, investigative journalist Siarhei Satsuk, was searched and interrogated by the Investigative Committee. It has been reported to the Belarusian Association of Journalists that Siarhei Satsuk was taken into custody after interrogation in the old case of accepting a bribe. He will be placed in pre-trial detention center #1 in Minsk.
MINSK -- Authorities in Belarus have failed to release a freelance journalist who has worked for RFE/RL’s Belarus Service even though the 10-day jail term he was handed on a controversial hooliganism charge ended on December 6.
