"Stand Up for Journalism" – 2008 in Belarus

Press Service of Belarusian Association of Journalists

The BAJ members in different Belarusian regions were drawing the public attention to the journalists' problems and the absence of freedom of speech in Belarus in different ways.

Thus, Barys Khamayda, a voluntary distributor of independent periodicals was distributing leaflets, prepared by the local membersof BAJ among the passers-by in Vitsiebsk.

«We produced two kinds of leaflets. They tell that Bealrus is holding the 154th place among 173 countries of the world in the global rating list on freedom of speech and on the difficulty of journalist work», the action initiators emphasized.

Moreover, Vitsiebsk journalists were cutting symbolic figures of people with the crossed mouths and glued them to light-poles and info-boards in the regional city center.

Local dwellers of Hlybokaye (Vitsiebsk region) received a fresh issue of «Volnaye Hlybokaye» newspaper with an article, dedicated to the problems of journalism in Belarus.

«We appealed to our readers with a request to write letters of complaint to the local «Belposhta» branch as well as to the Ideology Department at Hlybokaye District Executive Committee with an inquiry on the reasons of absence of «Volnaye Hlyblokaye» in the state monopolist’s subscription catalogue 2009 as well as at the news-stalls," Uladzimir Skrabatun, the «Volnaye Hlybokaye» Editor-in-chief noted in his interview to the BAJ Press Service.

Moreover, the «Stand Up for Journalism» campaign has been supported by a large number of Belarusian on-line periodical editions and bloggers' communities. Among other, the international campaign banners appeared on the Web-sites: www.naviny.by (BelaPAN News Agency), www.ximik.info (Ximik On-Line Newspaper, Navapolatsk), www.zautra.by (Your Country’s Tomorrow Informational and Analytical Portal), www.camarade.biz (Tovarisch newspaper’s Web-site) , www.gazetaby.com («Salidarnasc» On-Line Newspaper of Independent Trade Unions), www.nn.by (Nasha Niva nation-wide newspaper’s Web-site) and www.nv-online.info (Narodnaya Vola nation-wide newspaper’s Web-site).

A virtual demonstration, dedicated to the global campaign, is held on the BAJ pages in the Live Journal.

The BAJ activists from Brest, Homiel, and Mahilou arranged a flash-mob action in the city center of Minsk, dedicated to «Stand Up for Journalism» global campaign. They came to the Belarusian capital in order to throw away «the rose-colored glasses», put on the Belarusians' noses by the state-owned media.

Also, the young media workers were distributing noodles among the passers-by with a request  to eat the product instead of letting the state media «hang it on their ears» (i.e., being duped).
